Paulownia tomentosa or Kiri tree – the fastest growing tree in the world

The Kiri is considered to be the fastest growing tree in the world. With the right conditions, it will grow over 5 metres in one year and produce as much wood by volume as an Oak tree in a tenth of the time.

Paulownia is a genus of angiosperm trees, and one of the fastest growing trees in the world. Paulownia tomentosa can grow over 30 metres tall and has large heart shaped leaves ranging from 10–20 cm wide and 15–30 cm long with a 10–20 cm long petiole. The leaves grow in opposite decussate pairs, and as the name tomentosa suggests, are covered in hairs.

”These trees grew about 15 feet the first year and another 20 feet the second year,” Mr. Blickenstaff, the president of the American Paulownia Association, said, patting one of the round trunks. ”That’s 35 feet in two years.” At about 40 feet, the tree starts to grow more slowly, with an umbrella-like canopy. But it bears all the marks of an invasive plant: wind-dispersed seeds that thrive in disturbed areas. If given plenty of sun and good drainage, they take off like a rocket.

The Kiri tree is widely considered to be the fastest growing tree in the world. In just one year, the tree can grow over 5 metres in height. Its cultivation for sustainable wood production has been our passion since 2009. Since then, we have planted over ¼ million trees in more than 35 plantations in Germany and Spain. Today the WeGrow group of companies is regarded as a market-leader in Europe, and one of the world’s leading specialists in sustainable Kiri tree cultivation.

Chinese empress tree declared invasive species in Colombia
Fast-growing ‘kiri’ is a boon for carbon capture and agroforestry but threatens biodiversity

*********

Despite its beauty and valuable wood, Colombian scientists fear the kiri could be an ecological time bomb. It grows at an impressive rate and produces thousands of seeds that are dispersed by the wind. Its branches can reproduce new trees and it sprouts easily after fire

Paulownia is the genus of rapid-growing trees from Paulowniaceaefamily. Paulownia is native to South-East Asia. This tree is widely spread in Japan and Central China.

treeme stands for the sustainable cultivation and management of Paulownia trees on treeme-owned plantations for the production of Paulownia precious wood as Clear & Clean A-Ware. Already today Green Wood International AG cooperates with companies through the treeme project in order to implement the development and marketing of innovative Paulowniaholz products. The cultivation of the treeme Paulownia trees in Europe combines ecological and economic factors due to climate change and the scarcity of precious wood: High-quality precious wood is on the one hand harvested in EU countries and processed into products and on the other hand species-protected precious woods are thus preserved in the long term.

There are many common misconceptions that exist about the Empress (Paulownia) tree. Mostly, the information one finds on the internet has not differentiated between the species within the genus Paulownia, and there are many…but only one is “considered” invasive. This single species has painted the entirety of the genus into the corner of being labeled as “invasive.” This individual species (Paulownia tomentosa) gets all the attention, while the other species are assumed to be of the same traits. This is an incorrect assumption and needs to be brought to light. In this quick 10 minutes long video, Dr. Cathy Key clearly explains how the other Paulownia species (ie. fortunei, elongata, etc…) are NOT like the tomentosa, and how incredibly beneficial this tree truly is.
